Restaurant Recommendations, Firsts!

Friday, August 3rd, 2007

Hngry now has recommendations! On restaurant pages, underneath the Nearby Restaurant list, from time to time you’ll find a recommended restaurant… it’s a restaurant that someone who likes the current restaurant has also rated highly. Hopefully it’ll be helpful, especially when you’re in a different city, and will become more useful as Hngry grows.

I’ve also added support for what I’m calling Firsts. If you’re the first person to add a restaurant to Hngry, you get a First. The number of Firsts you’ve gotten shows up on your profile page and you also get credit on the restaurant page itself, with a link back to your profile. Here’s one that I was the first to add.

Widgets!

Thursday, July 19th, 2007

If you have either a Mac or PC, Hngry widgets are now available. You can now search Hngry right from your Dashboard or desktop, with a history of your most recent searches. On the Mac, the widget works with Dashboard, of course… on the PC side, Yahoo Widgets is required.

Menus, menus, menus!

Thursday, July 12th, 2007

Sorry for the radio silence lately!  I’ve been busy massaging a ton of data into shape over the past few weeks, and now I’m elated to announce that Hngry has somewhere near 200,000 restaurants in its local database, and about 180,000 menus available through one of our partners at AllMenus.  They’re much better at doing the menu thing than I can be by myself (because they are all about menus!), so we’ll be linking directly to their menus from here on out, and updating Hngry’s database as they update theirs.  This means that I can concentrate on writing cool features for you guys and it also means that Hngry has now become a lot more useful because of all the sweet menuy goodness inside!

If you’ve suggested a menu and we don’t have it now, I’ll be working on getting those into the system within the next month or so.

As always, thanks for being a Hngry user!  I really appreciate it.

Hngry + Facebook!

Saturday, June 9th, 2007

If you use both Hngry and Facebook, you’ll be pleased to know that I’ve been working on a Hngry app that you can use from within Facebook. It’s called Hngry mini, and right now it allows you to see your favorite restaurants (you can mark any restaurant as a fave from its Hngry page.. the one with the map), most recently added restaurants, and your entire restaurant list. More features are coming soon as well. Go check it out and add it to your Facebook account!!

search improvements again

Saturday, June 2nd, 2007

I’ve been making incremental changes/improvements to search… Hngry search is getting better all the time!  The latest improvements make it smarter about finding restaurants if you leave out apostrophes in the restaurant name, and give it full-text matching (if you type in a search like “Koto” in “Baton Rouge, LA” you will now get Derek Chang’s Koto as a result, instead of Hngry not finding a match at all.)

Hngry SMS to your cell phone / Restaurant information updates

Monday, May 21st, 2007

You may have noticed that Hngry got a couple of new features lately.

On every restaurant page, underneath the map, there is a new cell phone icon. Clicking that will bring up a window that lets you enter a cell phone number. Once you’ve filled it in, click “Send” and a text message will be sent to that number containing the restaurant name, address, phone number and website address (if one is listed.) Other Hngry users are already making great use of this new feature… I personally know of someone who used it just today to send themselves address information for restaurants for a trip they’re taking this coming weekend. Now they’ll have all the location info wherever they go!

Although this works great for normal phones, where this feature really comes its own is if you happen to have a smartphone: Smartphones will detect the phone numbers and make them links, so that after receiving the message, one click on the phone number will let you choose to dial the restaurant immediately or save it to your contact list. Awesome!

If you do not want to have to enter your cell number everytime you want to send a SMS from Hngry, you can save your phone number to your user profile. Just type it in, using the form 555-555-5555 and Apply changes. I promise not to sell/give away your personal information, as per the Hngry Privacy Policy, so go ahead, save your number! I’ve already entered mine.

Also, on every restaurant page there is now a link that says “Have updated info? Suggest a change.” If you notice that any information about a restaurant is incorrect, just click that link and let me know what the issue is, so that together we can keep Hngry as accurate as possible. Thanks in advance!

submit corrections!

Friday, May 18th, 2007

I added a feature last night to help keep Hngry as accurate and up to date as possible. On every restaurant page there is now a link that says ” Have updated info? Suggest a change.“. If you click on that, you get a page where you can type in any information about the restaurant that you feel needs to be changed or updated. After verification, your change will be made and you’ll be notified that it has gone through. Please help to keep Hngry the most awesome place on the internet to find a great restaurant. :)

Thanks!

menus!

Monday, May 7th, 2007

I’ve been working on cleaning up the menu code on Hngry, which should allow the menus to load a lot faster than they were before… I’ve also added some styles to the menus themselves so they look more like menus…. Here’s a sample of what menus look like now. Over the coming weeks, I plan to ramp up the menu side of Hngry and get all of your requested menus and a while lot more all added to Hngry as soon as possible.

Multiple city support, part 2.

Saturday, April 21st, 2007

Just a quick note: I added multiple city support to View all restaurants as well, so you can view all restaurants within a city on the same page. I also cleaned up the display of multiple cities on top of your restaurant list so that it’s cleaner and takes up less space.

Multiple city support.

Sunday, April 15th, 2007

Ok, you’ve been able to have restaurants from as many different cities as you wanted to have on your personal list for as long as Hngry has been around. There wasn’t really a good way to separate them, though. I wrote some code this weekend so that your restaurants automatically get broken up by city… On the top of your usual restaurant list page, Hngry gives you a list of all of the cities that you have restaurants in. Clicking any of them gives you a list of the restaurants for that particular city. Of course, if you’d like to look through your complete restaurant list, the “view all” link is still around.

On that same note: Your default metro is directly tied to the list of restaurants that you see first when you go to your restaurant list page. This means that if you happen to move, and set a different city as your home metro, the restaurants that you add for that city will come up on the first page, but the restaurants for that old default metro will not go away.. they’ll just be moved to a link on your list page that you can click on to view that metro’s restaurants… which is pretty much what you would expect. :)

Enjoy!
